John Gradwell Show Co-ordinator talks about the 2014 Show…

If you came to our Show last year whether as a spectator or as a visitor, I am sure you will agree that we had a wonderful display of beautiful classic cars and other vehicles to admire. Many of you told us how much you had enjoyed the day – and a few of you made some constructive comments about how we could improve things for next year. We have taken these comments into account and are confident that this year’s show will be better than ever.

We are pleased to confirm that the show will be located once again at the magnificent new arena generously provided for us by Waldegraves Holiday Park on Mersea Island. And as last year we will be combining the Transport Show with the Mersea Island Lions Club Summer Show. We have some exciting new developments for the Summer Show and we believe the two events combined will make a great day out for the whole family.

Some notes for exhibitors
Traffic management: We are aware that there were some hold-ups last year on the approach road when exhibitors were first arriving. To improve the flow of cars into the exhibition area this year we will be issuing windscreen stickers to all pre-registered vehicles. This should allow our marshals to identify vehicles more quickly and direct them to their allotted area in the arena. Another factor causing delays last year was vehicles arriving ‘on spec’ on the day. Whilst we are reluctant to turn away last-minute arrivals, we would encourage as many exhibitors as possible to notify us in advance of their intention to come – preferably by using our on-line exhibitor application form, downloadable postal application form, or at least phoning in advance (01206 384980). We may have to turn away unannounced arrivals if space is tight.

Weather: We are all hoping for a hot, sunny day on 9th August but in the (hopefully!) unlikely event that we have to cancel the Transport Show, we will post a notice on our website early on the morning of the event.

Show times: Assuming we have a nice day we would like all exhibitors to remain on site until the end of the show at 4pm if at all possible. Your co-operation in this would be much appreciated by all of us here, and particularly those paying to join us.

Commemorative plaques: We have always provided every exhibitor to our shows with a small commemorative plaque free-of-charge. This year, reluctantly, we will have to make a small charge for these plaques (this is expected to be in the region of £2.00 – the final price will be posted on the website as soon as it has been fixed). The charge will simply cover the cost of procuring the plaques and we will not be making any profit on them. Entry for exhibitors will remain FREE OF CHARGE as always. Income from the show is generated from donations, the sale of refreshments and other activities on the day and all profits go to local Lions’ charities.

Business partners: It is becoming more and more difficult to attract ‘partners’ to events like this. If any of you are aware of individuals or businesses that would like to benefit from financial support of the event, please contact John Gradwell on showplanningteam@btinternet.com.

In conclusion…
The Show continues to evolve, and we hope that everything we do will improve it for us all.
There are opportunities for contributions, and we have evolved the concept of ‘partnership’ which means all partners will benefit from this activity.
We look forward to your input to guide and inform the thinking that develops the Show. We are all a part of this Show and we do want to hear your suggestions.

The Mersea Island Lions Transport Show is one of our Club’s main fund-raising events of the year. The Lions Club of Mersea Island was chartered in 1978; its members wishing to help the less fortunate people within the Mersea Island area.  Their aims were simple:

  • Community Service,
  • Fund-raising to help the less fortunate within the community and further afield, and
  • Have fun and fellowship whilst doing it
